Walking Routes

An example of our maps with associated notes is shown here - this route leaves Beniali steadily climbing up the valley through the other picturesque villages before a short steep climb up to the ruins of Benisili Castle and on to the south ridge of the Gallinera valley. The route then follows the ridge east as far as the forada before descending back into Beniali (5hrs 30 mins to 6hrs).

Leave Beniali on the lane down past the village school, at the bottom continue along the camino to the next village, Benissiva.
0.10mins
Pass across front of church, through alley turning left past “casa gallinera”, right after the railings and left (waymarked yellow/white) onto cobbled path, bear right at the bottom and across small bridge and emerge behind bar “La Font”. Follow broad concrete track down to font and up the steps onto main road. Turn right and after 50 metres take track to the right. At the sharp right bend at the bottom take the waymarked path to the left (take care here) and emerge again on main road. Turn right and take next right (signposted “Piscina”) and follow this lane up to next village.
0.45mins
Arrive La Carroja. Turn right opposite “La Cueva” restaurant down the steps and all the way through village. As you descend take waymarked track to left. As you level out at top straight ahead keeping picturesque rubbish dump on your left. Past dump and straight ahead (signpost La Garriga). Down to bottom and follow river bed about 100metres and take waymarked track on left up to village.
1h.10mins
Arrive Alpatro. Follow “Carrer Sant Marc” to your right – all the way to the end (not left) and then turn left onto new road. Turn right at the end onto lane past pale green villa. Continue passing deserted village of Llombai . 100metres after Llombai turn left, continue to end and turn left up to main road.
1h.55mins
At main road turn right and immediately left onto lane. Continue to sharp right bend and take footpath in far corner which rises initially steeply and then zigzags up to the castle. Past castle to the font in far corner.
2h.30mins
Take the narrow goat track behind the font which zigzags fairly steeply up through gorse to the ridge. Turn left at the ridge and after 50 metres look for feint path left through gorse towards the signpost you can see up ahead. (At this point you may wish to scramble to the cross at the highest point for terrific views).
2h.50mins
From the signpost “Els Avantpassats mes lluyans” take the path south easterly towards the dip in the ridge (take care here). You now have about a 2 hour walk following the ridge across to the forada. Follow the path along the ridge and descend and take the path which goes left down through gorse. As you emerge from the gorse and level out look for path forking slightly left which decends gently at first but then zigzags down. At the bottom there is a track going right through terracing towards Alcala but take the steep goat track up the far side. At the top find the highest point (metal post in rocks) where you can pick out the path along next ridge. Follow this path to next highest pont (white concrete column belonging to National Geographic Society). From this point again you can see the path along next ridge but you will need to backtrack about 20 metres to pick the path down. Follow this ridge path all the way to the Forada.
4h.45mins
From the Forada take the left path and shortly turn left following the zigzag track back underneath the forada taking the right hand path at the split back towards Benitaia. At the surfaced lane turn left and follow down into Benitaia and then Benissiva. Take the road through Benissiva and then the lane through to Beniali.
5h.30mins
Arrive Beniali
